E "not so" Sporadic

Every summer we get some openings on the Sporadic E layer, up to 70 or 80 MHz , but this year seems that the ionosphere woke up on the right side of the bed.

Around the summer solstice and till today (July 9th) looks like the “mercurial” inosphere E Layer has been active daily, giving a lot of fun.

The OIRT band (the FM broadcast band of the ex soviet block between 65.8 and 74 MHz) almost daily, shows an intense activity with a lot of radio stations, some with a signal comparable to a local station. Don't you believe me? Look below here, there are a couple videos recorded during these openings.

Probably also our FM Broadcast band has been affected by these propagation events, but living basically below one the biggest transmitting center in Italy, doesn't give me any chance to scan the 88-108 band to search something that is not a local station, national or simply echoes from more far transmitters.

Sadly, there are no more analog tv channels on VHF low band, otherwise it would have been nice to receive those as well...patience, let's enjoy what we have.

Here you can download the daily updated list with the OIRT radio stations, surprisingly there are also stations that are not from East Europe, like from Italy.. and Chile. For Italy, it seems to be feeds for FM transmitters. I can receive one as well on 57 MHz.

"E" non così SPORADICO

L'inizio dell'Estate porta quasi sempre aperture in E Sporadico fino a 70/80 MHz , ma quest'anno sembra che la ionosfera si sia svegliata con il piede giusto.

Nelle giornate attorno al solstizio d'Estate e fino alla giornata odierna (9 Luglio) sembra che il "lunatico" strato E della ionosfera sia giornalmente attivo, regalandoci belle soddisfazioni.

La banda OIRT (L'FM dei paesi dell'ex blocco sovietico tra i 65,8 e i 74 MHz) si popola quasi ogni giorno di decine di emittenti, con segnali che arrivano con la stessa potenza di quelli locali. Non ci credete? Qui sotto un paio di video registrati durante le aperture.

Probabilmente anche la nostrana banda FM broadcast è soggetta a queste aperture che ho visto spingersi tranquillamente oltre gli 80 MHz, ma con la ressa si emittenti e relativi echi (sono in montagna, in pratica sotto uno dei centri trasmittenti più grandi d'Italia), è per me impossibile ricevere qualcosa di decente tra gli 88 e i 108 MHz

Purtroppo non ci sono più emittenti tv analogiche in banda prima, altrimenti sarebbe stato bello ricevere pure quelle, intanto accontentiamoci.

Come essere in Bielorussia - FM DXing in banda OIRT

Ecco come si presentava la banda OIRT il 31 maggio 2020 alle 15.32 UTC

La propagazione in VHF continua a dare soddisfazioni sia ai radioamatori che agli ascoltatori come me. Il 31 maggio pomeriggio mi sembrava di essere in Bielorussia. Sulla banda OIRT (dai 66 ai 74 MHz ho ricevuto ben 77 radio FM bielorusse. Tra loro anche diverse emittenti riportate con potenzi di un kW o inferiori.  La propagazione E Sporadica è rimasta fissa a lungo su quel Paese. Le sole 4 stazioni "straniere" sono state 3 russe e l'immancabile Radio Maria dall'Ucraina. Tutte e 4 però con il tx non distante dai confini bielorussi
.
Gli ascolti sono stati fatti a Bocca di Magra con un SDRPlay RSP1A e una piccola antenna discone Diamond D-150. Il software utilizzato è l'SDR Console V3, che permette di registrare la banda e di riascoltarla e analizzarla con calma senza problemi. Con database delle frequenze OIRT ho utilizzato quello di FMlist con il software CSVUserlistBrowser Ciao, Giampiero Bernardini

OIRT FM RADIOS -INSIDE VIEW

The solar activity peaking to max this months is pushing hard on broadcasters and listeners. Some '' big guns'' acting as real beacons in the proximity of 70MHz can be used to warn about MUFs at this frequencies.
This is useful for the broadcasters and listeners in the 88-108MHz FM band....MUF normally increases slowly (if increase conditions are set !!!). Broadcasters have some time to warn about interferencies. DX-ers have some time to prepare for hunting.
And do not forget the HAMs licensed to transmit in the 70MHz band (the author is one of them)! It is a strange band, technically very interesting. Why to spend money for beacons?....are here free of charge!
Living in Eastern Europe, was involved in installing, servicing or surveying some of this OIRT FM transmitters. Just a few of them are still on air.
Would like to introduce to you Radio Maria FM in Kiev, Ukraine.

It is transmitting on 69.02MHz with 2KW ERP , on a 24/7/365 time schedule. The polarisation is H. The radiation pattern in the horizontal plane is quite a circle. The antenna, an old Russian type (AUR-TchM-3000) is installed at 290m above ground on a 318m antenna tower situated in the city of Kiev (see picture). The transmitter is an old German type, as you can see in the picture.
