Klingenfuss Radio Monitoring

Dear friends,

solar activity is finally increasing and provides improved HF propagation conditions - see our screenshot from this morning at

600+ (more than six hundred!) Kiwi-SDRs are now available worldwide at

Enjoy!
Updated radiofax schedules of Athens Funabashi Guangzhou Hamburg Kagoshima Misaki et al can be found on our website - see the 2021/2022 GUIDE TO UTILITY RADIO STATIONS subpage. What's more, since publication (in December 2020) of the new 2021 editions of our books and CDs and databases, hundreds of new digital data decoder screenshots have been uploaded to our hotfrequencies webpage: so far 1000+ (more than one thousand) since 1 December 2020!

We've monitored and decoded thousands of fascinating HFDL messages for decades, and from locations all over the world. While state-of-the-art CPDLC messages are widely used elsewhere, good old Europe is still considerably behind ... By consequence, from an engineering / technical point of view, monitoring Agana Auckland Barrow Hat-Yai Molokai Muan Riverhead San-Francisco is far more interesting than Reykjavik Shannon Telde. The new station Muan, in particular, continues to be extremely busy! What's more, due to the China Virus Chaos and its containment - or the total failure to do so by certain governments just here -, there is much more air traffic within (and between) America - Asia - Pacific than in Africa - Europe.

Professional digital data decoder systems such as PROCITEC's go2MONITOR and WAVECOM's W-CODE provide post-processing software routines for converting ADS-B and CPDLC HEX messages et al. For example, ADS-B:

FIR codes used above, i.e. FUK and GDX, are listed at

and general ACARS message labels are explained at

A "manual" CPDLC HEX decoder for less sophisticated decoding applications (so far it does not work for ADS-B messages) can be found e.g. at

Beyond these features, SQL (Structured Query Language) filtering of professional decoder results allows precise selection of certain texts out of hundreds of decoded messages.

Standard aeronautical and telecommunication abbreviations can be found everywhere, as are four-letter ICAO location indicators and three-letter IATA location indicators worldwide. You might have noticed, however, that dozens of very special abbreviations (such as
ADIRS AHMS BTMS CIDS DFDAU EPESC FDIMU GPSSU HPTC LMTOGW MACG PECS SDAC VGMX ...), referring to the respective message text, are explained exclusively on our hotfrequencies webpage. The same goes for automatic data downlinks such as altitude/lateral/vertical changes and periodic reports. What's more, specific Internet tutorials will enable you to easily interpret standard FPLs, NOTAMs, and so on.

Best wishes - 73, Joerg Klingenfuss
