Klingenfuss Radio Monitoring

Dear friends,

solar activity is finally increasing and provides improved HF propagation conditions - see our screenshot from this morning at

600+ (more than six hundred!) Kiwi-SDRs are now available worldwide at

Enjoy!
Updated radiofax schedules of Athens Funabashi Guangzhou Hamburg Kagoshima Misaki et al can be found on our website - see the 2021/2022 GUIDE TO UTILITY RADIO STATIONS subpage. What's more, since publication (in December 2020) of the new 2021 editions of our books and CDs and databases, hundreds of new digital data decoder screenshots have been uploaded to our hotfrequencies webpage: so far 1000+ (more than one thousand) since 1 December 2020!

We've monitored and decoded thousands of fascinating HFDL messages for decades, and from locations all over the world. While state-of-the-art CPDLC messages are widely used elsewhere, good old Europe is still considerably behind ... By consequence, from an engineering / technical point of view, monitoring Agana Auckland Barrow Hat-Yai Molokai Muan Riverhead San-Francisco is far more interesting than Reykjavik Shannon Telde. The new station Muan, in particular, continues to be extremely busy! What's more, due to the China Virus Chaos and its containment - or the total failure to do so by certain governments just here -, there is much more air traffic within (and between) America - Asia - Pacific than in Africa - Europe.

Professional digital data decoder systems such as PROCITEC's go2MONITOR and WAVECOM's W-CODE provide post-processing software routines for converting ADS-B and CPDLC HEX messages et al. For example, ADS-B:

FIR codes used above, i.e. FUK and GDX, are listed at

and general ACARS message labels are explained at

A "manual" CPDLC HEX decoder for less sophisticated decoding applications (so far it does not work for ADS-B messages) can be found e.g. at

Beyond these features, SQL (Structured Query Language) filtering of professional decoder results allows precise selection of certain texts out of hundreds of decoded messages.

Standard aeronautical and telecommunication abbreviations can be found everywhere, as are four-letter ICAO location indicators and three-letter IATA location indicators worldwide. You might have noticed, however, that dozens of very special abbreviations (such as
ADIRS AHMS BTMS CIDS DFDAU EPESC FDIMU GPSSU HPTC LMTOGW MACG PECS SDAC VGMX ...), referring to the respective message text, are explained exclusively on our hotfrequencies webpage. The same goes for automatic data downlinks such as altitude/lateral/vertical changes and periodic reports. What's more, specific Internet tutorials will enable you to easily interpret standard FPLs, NOTAMs, and so on.

Best wishes - 73, Joerg Klingenfuss

Technical Handbook Radio Monitoring by Roland Proesch

The Technical Handbook for Radio Monitoring HF is aimed to shortwave listeners, who are interested in digital signals. On 544 pages with 513 figures and 138 tables many digital waveforms are described. The book shall help a shortwave listener to identify digital signals. Digital waveforms like FSK, PSK, DSSS aso. with the used protocols and alphabets are described with the help of spectrum and other pictures and the most important technical parameter. Additionally comprehensive tables are helping to identify the different user on shortwave.

Frequency Handbook for Radio Monitoring HF

This book shall help shortwave listener to identify stations on shortwave. It contains more than 20000 frequencies from 82 Hz to 30000 kHz.   Edition 2018

Technical Handbook for Radio Monitoring VHF/UHF: Edition 2017

This book is describing common waveforms used on VHF- and UHF. It shall help the interested reader to identify these waveforms. The book is describing digital modulations like FSK, PSK, FH, DSSS aso. and used protocols. Systems like AIS, ACARS, GMS, THURAYA and others are described with spectrum pictures and detailed technical parameter.

Technical Handbook for Satellite Monitoring: Edition 2017

This book decribes satellites, satellites systems and the used waveforms. It shall help to identfy unknown signals which can be received today. Digital waveforms like FSK, PSK, DSSS aso. with the used protocols and alphabets are described with the help of spectrum and other pictures and the most important technical parameter.

Signal Analysis for Radio Monitoring

This book is aimed to the shortwave listener, who is interested in digital signals. On more than 300 pages with many figures and tables the reader is introduced to the world of signal analysis. The book shall help a shortwave listener to identify digital radio signals. The different waveforms are explained and methodes are described how to analyse and retreave their main parameter. This includes for example the determination of the baud rate of an amplitude shift keying ASK, the measurement of the symbol rate of a phase shift keying PSK, the analysis of the parameter of one carrier of an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing OFDM or the identification of the different values of a frequency hopping signal. The reader is shown that the same methodes used for determination of a continous frequency shift keying FSK can be used for a frequency hopping system with short bursts. Step by step the reader gets an introduction to the different methods for measurement of the main parameter of a waveform. Comprehensive tables like i.e. used alpabets, protocols, coding or designation of emissions are helping to identify the different waveforms on shortwave.

Roland Proesch was born in 1960 in Kiel. He studied communication technology in Hamburg at the University of the German Army. Since 1977 he is a licensed radio amateur which has enabled him to pursue one of his most profound interests, namely all types of digital communication. He works in the field of all different kinds of radio monitoring, electronic warfare and satellite communication for over 25 years.

C'è sempre vita in onde corte.

variante STANAG-4285

pic. 4 a STANAG-4285 variant

FSK 600Bd/400Hz (Esercito Turchia)

pic. 5 - the Turkish FSK/600/400

2400:1000=x:120 --> x =288

256 (unknown symbols, data) + 32 (known symbols, mini-probe) = 288
